More about Origins Centre
Opened by President Thabo Mbeki in 2006, Origins Centre is a world-class museum that explores and celebrates the history of modern humankind. Conceptualised by a team of academics and designers from Wits University, the museum aims to provide visitors with a unique experience of Africa’s rich, complex heritage. An extensive collection of rock art from the Wits Rock Art Research Institute allows visitors to lay eyes on some of the earliest images created by mankind.
By combining cutting edge technology and creations by South African artists the museum takes visitors through a journey from the origins of mankind straight through to art, symbolism and technology. A highlight at the museum is the display of fossils discovered in South Africa that has provided insight into the development of humankind.
Home to a plethora of palaeoanthropological, archaeological and genetic materials, the origins centre charts the origins of mankind through ancient tools, artefacts of spiritual significance to early humans and examples of the region’s striking rock art.
Take an 80 000-year journey in search of art and culture culminating in an illuminating and educational experience for adults and little ones alike.
